Expert systems in the 1980s provided medical and engineering advice that often surpassed human capability, causing professional identity crises among early adopters who found their specialized knowledge replicated and exceeded by rule-based algorithms. These systems demonstrated that cognitive tasks previously thought to be the exclusive domain of highly trained professionals could be automated, leading to an erosion of confidence in human expertise. The 2010s introduced algorithmic management in workplaces, leading to documented increases in employee stress and burnout due to constant surveillance and the optimization of human behavior to fit rigid efficiency models. Addressing these deficits requires a key upgrade of how AI interfaces are engineered to present recommendations and interact with users.
