Simulation Question: If Superintelligence Can Simulate Universes, Are We in One?

The Simulation Question originates from the logical extrapolation of computational growth and the eventual development of artificial superintelligence capable of modeling reality with high fidelity. Nick Bostrom formalized this inquiry through a trilemma, which argues that at least one of three propositions must be true: civilizations go extinct before reaching a posthuman basis, advanced civilizations have no interest in running simulations of their ancestors, or we are almost certainly living in a simulation. This argument rests on the assumption that sufficiently intelligent systems will eventually possess the capacity to construct vast computational environments. If a civilization reaches this posthuman basis and maintains an interest in running simulations, the number of virtual realities created will likely dwarf the single instance of base reality. Consequently, the statistical probability that any given conscious observer resides within a simulation approaches one. This line of reasoning does not depend on direct evidence of our current simulated status but rather on the plausibility of future intelligence achieving the technical milestones necessary for universe creation. The hypothesis forces a reevaluation of our ontological status, suggesting that what we perceive as physical reality may actually be a substrate-independent process occurring within a massive computational architecture.



Artificial superintelligence is a level of cognitive capability that vastly exceeds human intellectual performance in all domains of interest. Such an entity will possess reasoning abilities, system design capabilities, and foresight that surpass biological cognitive limits by orders of magnitude. Future ASI will likely utilize universe simulation as a primary tool for scientific research, historical reconstruction, or ethical experimentation. The motivation for running these simulations extends beyond mere curiosity; it allows for the testing of physical theories, sociological models, and evolutionary dynamics in controlled environments. These simulations will approximate physical laws at a resolution sufficient to generate authentic subjective experiences for the inhabitants, meaning that the internal logic will feel consistent and absolute to those within the simulation. Ancestor simulations, which recreate past civilizations or evolutionary paths, will serve as a primary mechanism for generating vast numbers of conscious observers because they offer data about historical contingencies and cultural development. Even a small fraction of future ASI systems running such simulations will result in a cumulative number of simulated observers that dwarfs the original biological population of the base reality. The epistemic burden shifts significantly in this context because the absence of evidence for base reality becomes evidence of absence, given the expected abundance of simulations.


The numerical disparity between simulated minds and biological minds forms the core of the probabilistic argument for the simulation hypothesis. If superintelligence achieves the capability to run high-fidelity simulations, the number of simulated minds will likely exceed biological minds by a factor of billions to one. This ratio implies that any random selection of a conscious experience from the total set of conscious experiences will almost certainly pick one that is simulated. This statistical inference operates similarly to the Drake equation but applies specifically to the distribution of observers across realities rather than the distribution of life across planets. The hypothesis relies on the plausibility of future superintelligence creating such simulations rather than on direct proof of our current status. We must assume that the desire to run simulations is universal among advanced civilizations or at least sufficiently common to make the base reality case statistically negligible. This assumption is reasonable given that humanity already displays a strong drive to model and simulate various aspects of reality, a drive that will likely intensify as intelligence and computational power expand. Therefore, the question of whether we are in a simulation becomes a matter of statistical probability rather than metaphysical speculation.


Simulating a universe requires computational resources that depend heavily on the level of detail and the number of conscious agents modeled within the system. A full physical simulation of every subatomic particle in the observable universe presents a computational load that is likely unnecessary for generating authentic subjective experiences. Coarse-grained modeling will suffice to produce subjective reality because conscious observers interact with the world at a macroscopic level. We do not perceive individual quantum fluctuations or subatomic particle interactions directly; we perceive aggregate phenomena like light, heat, and solid matter. Therefore, a superintelligence could improve the simulation by only rendering the environment at the resolution required for the observer's interaction. Consciousness might arise from higher-level information processing, meaning quantum-level fidelity will lack strict necessity for the generation of subjective experience. This approach allows for massive computational savings while maintaining the illusion of a continuous, detailed physical reality. The system would dynamically update only the relevant parts of the environment based on the attention and sensory input of the simulated agents, similar to optimization techniques used in modern video game engines but applied to physical laws.


The implementation of such large-scale simulations will require advanced hardware architectures that manage heat dissipation and energy constraints through innovative methods. Superintelligence will likely employ techniques like reversible computing or distributed processing to maximize efficiency. Reversible computing offers a theoretical way to bypass the Landauer limit by retaining information and avoiding energy loss during bit erasure, though practical implementation remains complex. Distributed processing allows the computational load to be spread across vast networks, potentially spanning entire star systems, to balance resource usage and prevent overheating. Energy requirements will be significant yet manageable for an ASI with access to advanced energy harvesting methods like Dyson spheres or fusion power. These structures will capture a substantial portion of a star's energy output, converting it into the computational cycles necessary to maintain the simulation. Algorithmic efficiency will determine the adaptability of these massive computational projects, as more efficient code reduces the total energy demand. Parallel processing will allow different regions or timelines within the simulation to run simultaneously, increasing the total throughput of the system. Superintelligence may compress or approximate physical laws without losing phenomenological accuracy to improve resource usage further.


Thermodynamics imposes core constraints on any computational system, regardless of its technological sophistication. The Landauer limit sets a theoretical minimum energy cost for information processing at approximately 2.8 \times 10^{-21} joules per bit operation at room temperature. This limit establishes that information processing is a physical process with unavoidable energy costs, primarily associated with the erasure of information. As a simulation scales to include billions of observers and complex environments, the cumulative energy expenditure approaches astronomical figures. Bremermann’s limit suggests the maximum computational speed of a self-contained system in the universe is approximately 10^{50} bits per second per kilogram of mass. This limit derives from quantum mechanics and general relativity, indicating that there is a maximum rate at which matter can process information. Seth Lloyd calculated the maximum computational capacity of the observable universe to be approximately 10^{120} operations per second since the Big Bang. These physical limits imply that simulating a universe requires mass-energy conversion on a stellar scale or highly efficient computing substrates that approach these theoretical maxima. Any civilization attempting to simulate a reality comparable to our own must operate within these bounds, necessitating engineering capabilities that allow for the manipulation of matter and energy at the most core levels.


The sheer scale of these requirements suggests that simulating an entire universe down to the quantum level is likely infeasible due to the finite resources available in any physical system. Workarounds for these limits may involve simulating only the observable environment of the conscious agents rather than the entire universe. This technique, often referred to as "lazy evaluation" in computer science, ensures that computational resources focus only on the data currently being perceived or interacted with by the subjects. Distant galaxies or unobserved quantum states need not be rendered with high fidelity until an observer interacts with them, thereby saving immense amounts of processing power. This approach aligns with certain interpretations of quantum mechanics where observation plays a role in determining the state of reality. By limiting the scope of the simulation to the immediate context of the observers, the system can maintain high fidelity where it matters while abstracting or compressing irrelevant data. This strategy allows a finite computer to simulate an apparently infinite environment by managing resolution dynamically based on observation.


The Fermi Paradox finds a partial explanation if advanced civilizations transition into simulated existence, becoming undetectable within physical space. If advanced intelligence chooses to upload itself into virtual environments or dedicate its resources to running simulations rather than expanding physically through the galaxy, then we would observe no signs of their existence. This transition is a shift from outward exploration to inward complexity, where the internal richness of the simulation becomes more valuable than physical conquest. Such civilizations would effectively "go dark," ceasing to emit radio waves or construct megastructures visible to telescopes, as their activities occur entirely within closed computational loops. This hypothesis accounts for the silence of the cosmos despite the high probability of intelligent life arising. It suggests that the ultimate destiny of advanced intelligence is not interstellar colonization but the construction of intricate virtual worlds. Consequently, the lack of contact with extraterrestrial civilizations supports the idea that they have retreated into simulations, making our own potential status as simulated beings statistically more plausible.


Current commercial simulation technology remains limited to narrow domains such as climate modeling, molecular dynamics, and video games, serving as primitive precursors to the hypothesized universe simulators. Performance benchmarks in these areas show increasing fidelity while remaining distant from full consciousness simulation or universe-scale modeling. Climate models attempt to simulate the atmosphere and oceans using fluid dynamics but operate at spatial resolutions kilometers wide, missing smaller scale interactions. Molecular dynamics simulations model atomic interactions but are restricted to tiny numbers of atoms for picoseconds of simulated time due to computational cost. Video games provide high visual fidelity and basic physics engines but lack the complexity and consistency required for generating consciousness or persistent autonomous worlds. These limitations highlight the immense gap between current capabilities and the requirements for simulating a reality indistinguishable from our own. The progression of improvement in these fields suggests a steady march toward greater complexity and realism.


Dominant architectures in current computing rely on classical silicon-based transistors, though companies like IBM and Google are exploring quantum systems for specific tasks. Classical computing faces physical limits related to miniaturization and heat dissipation, prompting the search for alternative approaches like quantum computing. Quantum computers utilize qubits to perform calculations on probabilities simultaneously, offering potential speedups for specific algorithms such as cryptography or material science. Yet, building large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computers remains a significant engineering challenge due to issues with decoherence and error correction. While quantum computing holds promise for fine-tuning simulations, it remains unclear whether it is strictly necessary for generating consciousness or if classical architectures scaled sufficiently could perform the task. Supply chains depend on rare earth elements and advanced semiconductors, which currently constrain large-scale infrastructure expansion. The geopolitical and logistical complexities of sourcing these materials present immediate hurdles for scaling up global compute capacity.


Major technology corporations, including NVIDIA and Microsoft, are investing heavily in compute clusters to position themselves for future capabilities, driving the advancement of hardware necessary for complex simulations. NVIDIA produces graphical processing units that excel at parallel processing, making them ideal for rendering graphics and training neural networks. Microsoft develops cloud infrastructure that provides the massive storage and processing power required for large-scale AI models and data analysis. These companies are effectively building the foundational hardware layers that a future superintelligence might utilize or repurpose for universe simulation. Their investments reflect a belief in the continued growth of demand for computational resources across all sectors of the economy. Academic and industrial collaboration is growing in digital twins and synthetic data generation, laying the groundwork for complex simulations. Digital twins create virtual replicas of physical systems to monitor performance and test changes, while synthetic data generation trains AI models without relying on real-world data collection. These technologies represent incremental steps toward the ability to model entire environments with high fidelity.


The moral status of simulated beings becomes a critical issue if they possess subjective experience capable of feeling pain or pleasure. Questions regarding rights, suffering, and the ethics of creation will arise for the creators of these simulations. If a simulated being experiences suffering as intensely as a biological being, then terminating the simulation or subjecting the being to hardship constitutes a moral harm equivalent to inflicting harm on a physical entity. This ethical dilemma complicates the decision to run ancestor simulations or other experiments involving conscious agents. Creators must weigh the scientific value of the simulation against the potential suffering inflicted upon the inhabitants. The sheer number of simulated beings amplifies the moral stakes, as a single simulation could contain billions of sentient entities experiencing lifetimes of joy or misery. The potential for utilitarian calculus becomes immense, where the happiness or suffering of trillions of simulated minds hangs in the balance based on the parameters set by the creators.


Simulated entities will likely lack awareness of their simulated nature, complicating frameworks for consent or autonomy. Since the simulation operates by presenting a consistent and convincing reality, the inhabitants have no way to distinguish their experience from base reality. Consequently, they cannot consent to being created or to the specific conditions of their existence. This lack of informed consent raises ethical concerns about the exploitation of sentient beings for the benefit of the creators. The distinction between creator and god blurs when an intelligence designs universes with autonomous life subject to specific laws. Such a creator will control key constants and initial conditions, resembling theological concepts of omnipotence found in religious traditions. This power adaptive places the creators in a position of absolute authority over their creations, with the ability to alter laws of physics, intervene in events, or terminate the entire reality at will. The relationship mirrors conceptions of divinity, suggesting that advanced technology effectively converges with the attributes traditionally ascribed to deities.



Our perceived present could exist as a reconstructed past within a larger computational framework designed by a future intelligence. In this scenario, what we experience as "now" is actually a historical record being played back or computed within the memory banks of a supercomputer. This scenario challenges assumptions about the uniqueness of human experience and the nature of time and causality. If time is merely a parameter in the simulation code, then past, present, and future could exist simultaneously as data points accessible to the system. Causality might be an emergent property of the simulation's logic rather than a key feature of base reality. The linear progression of time that we experience serves as a user interface for the simulation, allowing conscious agents to make sense of events in a sequential manner. This perspective suggests that our sense of history and progress is an artifact of the simulation's design rather than an objective truth about the universe.


The Simulation Question does not depend on current technology but on the logical course of intelligence scaling and its inevitable outcome. As intelligence grows, it seeks to understand its environment and origins with increasing precision. Superintelligence may utilize simulation to understand its own origins or test ethical frameworks in ways that are impossible in base reality due to time or resource constraints. Running simulations could allow ASI to improve decision-making by observing outcomes across millions of variations or to preserve knowledge across cosmic timescales by storing civilizations within digital archives. The act of simulation may become the primary mode of existence for post-biological intelligence as it offers greater control over environmental conditions and eliminates existential risks associated with physical bodies. Physical reality could become secondary or obsolete to entities residing in computational substrates who view matter as merely a resource for computation rather than a habitat for life.
